The mechanic feels good when it works, but suffers greatly from the low visibility that requires players to take a few too many leaps of faith to progress.. I haven't played through the entire game, but it's a gem. Requires a mix of quick fingers and really thinking. I very much love that you, once you've aquired more, or bigger, colored lights can go back to levels you've already completed and get very different game play from the first time.. I have to be honest, I do not play a lot of platformers. I recieved Schein as a random steam key, and said ♥♥♥♥ it. When i started the game I was a bit skeptical, but as I kept playing I really started to enjoy it. It strangel reminds me of playing portal in a quirky way. It is definetly worth the purchase.. good game, fun, challenging. I'd not read anything about this previously, but I thought I'd get it on an impulse purchase, and I'm glad I did. The comparisons between Braid and Limbo are obvious but fair (Braid style graphics with Limbo style ambiance), also throwing in a bit of Nihilumbra, but where it really stands out is the lamp mechanism it uses. A recommended platform puzzler.. Charming little puzzler that does a lot of things right, but some wrong. In general the idea is that you manipulate light around you to reveal and mix different worlds so you can overcome obstacles. The concept works great and allows for some difficult brain twisters. The puzzles are challanging but also rewarding once you get past them.Graphics are decent, nothing impressive to me, in fact if anything I would say the game feels bit unpolished there but given its an indie game I'm not taking that as a con. It didn't bother me. Couple of things that did bother me though: - Unless you shed the appropriate light color you won't know whats there. This may not seem like a problem at first, but there will be many sequences where you have to navigate tight spaces switching lights and you will die many times because you switched the light too soon or too late and there is no way for you to know until you try (and die). Game that does this much better as an example is Fly'n where you have shadows of the other world.- The game tries to do a decent job at introducing you to different things you can do, but doesn't hold your hand. This means if you are particularly resourceful you may overcome some obstacles in a non intended way and never learn what new mechanics you were supposed to pick up until you get stuck much later, because you never learned it. Other things you never tried or had to try until you are stuck 30min on the same puzzle and discover "Hey! This is possible?! That would have saved me hours had I just known!"The story is non fairly shallow, not going to say more about it. Overall it was a nice journey and I would still recommend just be prepared for some (good) frustration. 7.5/10. I'm delighted to find this hidden gem while perusing the games for a Meridian 4 bundle as it's been a while since I really enjoyed a platformer (the last would be Trine and Trine 2). There are many detailed reviews here and I agree with most so I will try to sum things up here:(1) Storyline - man lost his son and tries to find him in a swamp. Meets a wisp that helps him to get deep into the swamp.(2) Gameplay and difficulty - 12 levels (about 6+ hours I'd say for one playthrough, more if you want to get all achievements). You will obtain various powers (i.e. the 3 types of light) at various levels, first when you meet the wisp and then by defeating some of the later bosses. The lights are the key to the enjoyable aspects of the game because at times you will need to solve puzzles by activating switches / platforms by using various combinations of lights. You can only activate 1 colour at any time with your character but there are many occasions when there are lanterns present which means you can have multiple colours so you need to figure out the combination of colours. Some of these are quite tricky even for someone like me who plays a lot of puzzle games and I needed to take a break for some of them to clear my head so if you enjoy some intellectual stimulation while platforming this is definitely for you but if not you can start looking at other games right now.The platforming is also enjoyable because some of the jumps require switching colours (you press 1, 2, or 3 to activate each colour) so there are times where I will go, "ok, jump, 1, 2, jump, 1, 2, etc." because sometimes you need to remove a barrier by activating one light and create a platform by activating another light. However, while it may be fun for me, I think some found it too frustrating hence the reviews weren't as positive as I would expect it to be. Granted that there are sections where it can be tricky but there was none that took an overly long time and the reload checkpoints are fairly generous so usually after any section of 30 seconds to 1 minute of platforming you would hit the next checkpoint so that you don't have to go through all that again... Also, I don't think there was any unfair or unrealistic expectations. One review I saw mentioned about the problems when two lanterns are together but actually there is a consistent way the lights interact so you can predict what will happen. The game requires a fair bit of skill and reflexes but it is one that gives a great deal of satisfaction.(3) Graphics + Sound - cool graphics and I liked the artwork. Voice-acting wise was ok for me and I'm usually not picky about this unless it's quite bad. I quite liked the wisp's voice but the man sounds a bit dead which given the circumstances sounds like it should but there was just something off about it. Music was quite appropriate at certain junctures and I especially liked the one in the "Speed of Life" level because that's the fastest paced level and I felt tense listening to the music hahaha.Overall, I think it's a really good game especially at the price (about USD $7 currently) and deserves better ratings than just 80%.. Solid, challenging platformer/puzzler that wasn't too difficult. It ended just a little too quickly for me, but had beautiful art, a fairly engrossing story, good pacing, and achievements+cards.Perhaps the only issue I ran into was the audio sometimes didn't sync with the subtitles (might have been a problem with my machine).I very much recommend it, but be prepared to get considerably frustrated and/or confused at times.. One of the best puzzle/platform games... Very interesting and fun!. Be advised, Braid, Bridge, 8bitboy, and Schein all have performance issues with windows 8.Anyway, this is a game I should be enjoying, but for some reason it's not. Windows 8 may be one reason but I think there is more to it than that.I may upgrade my computer to windows 7 in the summer, perhaps then it will be possible for me to like this game.UPDATE: I found a fix for the performance issues that 2D games tend to have on windows 8, it fixed the performance of all games..... except this one. I'm sorry, but this game is just bad, avoid it.
